Yoga Therapy for Autism
Find Peace, Calm, and Connection
Imagine a space where your child or young adult with autism can find moments of peace, build connections, and discover their inner strength. That’s what yoga therapy offers. It’s a gentle, supportive approach that understands the unique needs of individuals on the autism spectrum, helping them navigate the challenges of emotional regulation, communication, sensory experiences, and social interactions.
Glowstar Yoga Therapy Approach
I’ve been inspired by the teachings of Shawnee Thornton Hardy and other teachers. I create a safe and nurturing environment, tailor each session to meet the specific sensory and emotional needs of your child or young adult. Through gentle, trauma-sensitive yoga, mindful movements, adapted poses, soothing breathwork, and calming relaxation techniques, I help them find emotional balance, sensory regulation, and a deeper connection with their bodies.
I focus on the present moment, encouraging relaxation, mindful breathing, and the development of emotional self-regulation. This mindful approach helps reduce anxiety and provides practical tools for managing overwhelming stimuli, making everyday life a little easier.
Each Glowstar Yoga Therapy session is designed to address the specific needs of individuals with autism and incorporates the following aspects:
- Mindful movements – Gentle yoga postures adapted to improve body awareness, coordination, flexibility, and muscle tone
- Tailored breathwork – Various breathing techniques like diaphragmatic breathing to calm the nervous system and ease anxiety
- Relaxation and meditation – Guided imagery and body scans to enhance focus, mental clarity, and emotional balance.
- Restorative practices – Deeply supportive postures held for longer times to improve self-regulation, manage anxiety, and to achieve sense of calm
- Sensory-Friendly Activities – Activities that engage the senses to improve body awareness and support sensory integration
- Gentle Trauma-Informed Practices – Somatic practices to help release stored tension and promote emotional healing
Multiple Benefits
Yoga therapy offers a range of benefits for individuals with autism such as soothing sensory sensitivities and helping manage sensory overload, building social and communication skills by enhancing imitation skills and language development (Shanker & Pradhan, 2023; Kaur et al., 2021; Hardy, 2023; Sumar, 2007). It strengthens focus and flexibility, improves problem-solving, and emotional regulation, reduces impulsivity, stress, anxiety and promotes relaxation, while also improves posture and flexibility. Yoga therapy encourages relaxation before bedtime to improve sleep quality (Esposito et al., 2020; Sumar, 2007).
Research consistently highlights the positive impact of yoga therapy on individuals with autism. Studies show that mindfulness-based yoga interventions can improve social responsiveness, reduce challenging behaviors, and enhance overall well-being. For instance, a 12-week yoga program showed significant improvements in social responsiveness and reduced problem behaviors in children with autism (Shanker & Pradhan, 2023). Other studies, like Kaur et al. (2021), have shown how yoga can enhance joint attention and social communication. Sumar (2007) emphasizes the power of yoga to improve attention, relaxation, and behavioral responses, especially for children with autism.
